Manchester United legend Pat Crerand hails Jonny Evans
Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans has been Manchester United's player of the season, according to Pat Crerand.
Evans was criticised by United fans and pundits earlier in the campaign when he was red carded during Manchester City's famous 6-1 win at Old Trafford.
Since then, however, he has excelled, especially since the turn of the year with United surging clear of City in the title race.
Former United hero Crerand believes Evans has played a defining role.
“When Nemanja Vidic got injured I thought we were in trouble but Jonny Evans came into the side and has been outstanding,” says Crerand. “I know United fans are choosing their player of the season now and I would say it is between Michael Carrick and Evans, with Jonny on top for me.
“He has been brilliant at the back alongside Rio Ferdinand just when United needed a strong defence. I know he took a lot of criticism earlier in the season and last season too, but what happens with young players is that they break into the first team and do really well and then fade a little.
“That happened to Jonny, then good players kick on and become better and that is what Jonny has done. He's been superb and is someone who could be a future United captain.”
