Paddy McNair is to miss the rest of the season through injury, it has been reported.

Sky Sports reported the defender suffered a cruciate ligament injury in Sunderland's win over Hull at the weekend.

The defender went down from a challenge in the first half, but played on until the 88th minute when he was substituted after suffering another knock.

He will likely be out of action for up to eight months.

It will mean the Northern Ireland international could miss important World Cup qualifying games next year.

McNair moved to David Moyes' Black Cats in the Summer from Manchester United when it became clear game time would be limited at Old Trafford under new boss Jose Mourinho.
