Lingard's new deal a crucial for United, says Mourinho
Jesse Lingard's new and improved contract has raised some eyebrows, but Jose Mourinho believes it is a "very important" deal for Manchester United. A late bloomer, the 24-year-old has established himself in the first team and the past year has seen him score in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Community Shield triumphs, as well as establishing himself in the England squad.
That progress led United - who face Sunderland tomorrow - to agree a new and improved deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2021, with the option for a further year.
The reported £100,000-a-week wages have shocked some, but Mourinho said: "He is a good player, and because of his age and happiness he has conditions to be even better. He's English, made in the academy - so it is a very important contract."
