Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been given assurances over his future and will be handed £80million to spend in the transfer marker this summer.

The Dutchman has one year left to run on his three-year contract at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal has come in for much criticism this season with the club's hopes of challenging for the Premier League title evaporating - United are currently fifth in the league table, one point behind rivals Manchester City with each having just seven games remaining.

Van Gaal, who also oversaw a group stage exit in the Champions League this season before rivals Liverpool knocked his side out of the Europa League, will retain his job and be given the large sum to spend as United plan for next season.

Sacked Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho - whose full-time successor has been announced as Antonio Conte - had been tipped for the United hotseat this summer to replace Van Gaal.

Van Gaal has been praised for giving youth a chance, with Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Timothy Fosu-Mensah featuring.
