Manchester United's Bastian Schweinsteiger may sue toy firm over Nazi doll doppleganger
Bastian Schweinsteiger is considering suing a toy firm for their production of a Nazi doll which looks suspiciously like the German international - and is even named 'Bastian'.
German daily newspaper Bild highlighted the toy and its uncanny resemblance to the United player in an article earlier this week.
Bild reporters contacted manufacturers at Hong Kong-based firm DiD Corporation, who told them that any likeness between the Nazi doll and the footballer was "completely coincidental".
We don’t sell any figures which resemble footballers. It is a complete coincidence that the figure ‘Bastian’ looks like Schweinsteiger,” spokesman Patrick Chan said.
“We think that all Germans look like that. Bastian is also a very common name in Germany.”
The toy figure was expected to be sold in Europe in the coming months but this seems unlikely now as the player's legal team have indicated they will be taking legal action.
Despite denying any resemblance Bastian's lawyers are not happy.
“This is a clear violation of Schweinsteiger’s personality rights,” media lawyer Ulrich Amelung said.
“To see him as a swastika-bearing Wehrmacht soldier also constitutes a gross defamation and insult.”
