Shrew... that's a relief for United

Louis van Gaal breathed a sigh of relief as his Manchester United team avoided an FA Cup upset by beating League One Shrewsbury Town 3-0 in the fifth round.

United coasted into a home quarter-final against West Ham thanks to first-half goals from Chris Smalling and Juan Mata, followed by a third from Jesse Lingard just after the hour mark.

The Red Devils even had the luxury of being able to play the final 14 minutes with just 10 men when substitute Will Keane's appearance lasted only five minutes due to injury.

Van Gaal said: "I was very pleased. We have played 70 fantastic minutes in a professional way, creating chances and scoring goals.

"Everyone shall say United had to win against Shrewsbury. For the players it is fantastic because we are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup."
