Michael Owen sympathy for Arsene Wenger

Michael Owen believes the pressure Arsene Wenger is under at Arsenal merely emphasises the incredible job Sir Alex Ferguson has done at Manchester United.

Unless Arsenal can defeat United at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow to retain their outside interest in the Premier League title race, the Gunners will be condemned to a sixth season without a trophy.

That barren run has raised question marks over Wenger's position, with some supporters feeling it is time Arsenal dispensed with the Frenchman's services.

It seems a preposterous thought considering how Wenger has guided Arsenal's fortunes down the years.

Yet those six long years are two more than Ferguson had to wait for his first trophy at United, since when the longest they have had to hang around for silverware is a single season.

“Arsene Wenger is one of the best managers to have ever managed in the Premier League,” said Owen. “He has turned the club around and done fantastically well over the years.

“It just highlights what our manager has done.

“The success he has had here in such a fiercely competitive business such as this is amazing.”

As nearest challengers Chelsea head to Old Trafford next Sunday, United's main task for this weekend is to ensure their advantage over the Blues is not reduced to three points, which would offer Carlo Ancelotti and his players a major incentive.

“We must have the attitude of trying to get three points,” warned Owen ahead of the Arsenal clash.
