Stoke v West Ham - story of the match

Stoke and West Ham shared the spoils in a goalless draw as Jack Butland kept his first clean sheet since returning in front of watching England manager Gareth Southgate.

The Potters reached the 40-point mark but they had no joy in an attacking sense as Saido Berahino was denied a first goal for the club by Winston Reid's fine block and Adrian's terrific save.

Southgate, who forwent the Manchester derby on Thursday in favour of a rugby league contest, was present to witness Butland make just his second appearance since fracturing his ankle on international duty last March and he impressed with saves from Andre Ayew and Manuel Lanzini ahead of a possible Three Lions return in June.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"Gareth Southgate's at Stoke watching football rather than rugby league today. He may be regretting it so far #scfc #whufc" - Liam Blackburn

STAR MAN

Butland. On a day when few stood out, the contributions of Butland and Adrian were important. The latter may have made the best save to thwart Berahino but Butland also produced a solid showing that would have impressed Southgate.

IN WITH THE CROWD

England boss Southgate was back watching the sport he is most familiar with having skipped the Manchester derby on Thursday to instead watch Leeds v Huddersfield in rugby league's Super League. His interest will have mainly been on seeing how goalkeeper Butland fared on just his second start back after 13 months out. And this was a solid contribution from the 24-year-old stopper as he made three big saves to keep the Hammers at bay.

VIEW FROM THE BENCH

The travelling supporters were not happy when Slaven Bilic removed Andre Ayew with 21 minutes to go in favour of midfielder Mark Noble, while his counterpart Mark Hughes brought on a striker in the shape of Peter Crouch. Hammers fans then chanted for Ashley Fletcher, but Bilic used his final substitution to bring on Robert Snodgrass to leave them frustrated again. Ultimately this game only highlighted how much both teams will need more going forward when the summer window opens.
