Fernando Torres’ 50th Premier league goal fired Liverpool back into the hunt for a top four place last night, sealing a slender victory over Aston Villa.
The Spanish striker latched onto a defensive mistake to slide the ball past Brad Friedel, two minutes into injury time and decide a dour encounter at Villa Park and in turn become the fastest Liverpool player to reach the half cenuty mark.
Torres’ last-gasp winner took Liverpool to within two points of fifth placed Villa and four away from Tottenham who occupy that coveted fourth spot.
There is now a Premier League break for the FA Cup with Rafa Benitez’s men taking on Reading, but after that they welcome Spurs to Anfield in what will be another crucial clash.
Goal hero Torres admitted that gaining three points last night was hugely important.
“We needed to win to be close to
the top four. It was a massive game for us,” he said.
“Last season we kept working until the end and got points in extra time, like today.”
