Tottenham v Southampton - Story of the match

Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli proved there is life after Harry Kane for Tottenham as each player hit the target in a battling 2-1 victory over Southampton.

Kane's absence meant Son Heung-min led the line but it was Spurs' attacking midfielders who filled the void, with Eriksen breaking the deadlock before Alli won and then converted a penalty.

James Ward-Prowse cut the deficit for Southampton after half-time to spark hopes of a comeback but Tottenham held on to reduce the gap on Chelsea back to 10 points. Saints, meanwhile, stay 10th.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"If Spurs don't finish above Arsenal this year they may as well give up." - Former Tottenham striker Gary Lineker.

STAR MAN

Mousa Dembele. Dembele was imperious in midfield, his driving runs and composure in possession invaluable to Tottenham throughout.

STRIKER TROUBLE

Spurs will hope Alli and Eriksen can continue their scoring form in Kane's absence and Southampton now face a similar challenge after Manolo Gabbiadini hobbled off in the first half. Gabbiadini has been excellent for Saints in recent weeks and any extended absence will come as a huge blow.

STAT ATTACK

Spurs have now won 10 successive league games at White Hart Lane, which is their longest run since October 1987 when they managed 14 in a row.
