David Healy: Flamini holds key to Arsenal's double
Friday, 7 March 2008
I said in this column last week that I fancied Arsenal to get a result in Milan this week but I didn't think they'd be so convincing.
Arsene Wenger and his side were fantastic and created a little bit of history in knocking the Champions League holders out of this season's competition.
The 2-0 win at the San Siro was Milan's first defeat to an English club on their own patch but it was a classy performance from Arsenal.
Late goals from Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor made sure of the famous victory but their class went much further than that.
Fabregas was sensational in the heart of the midfield, Adebayor was a constant threat up front but Mathieu Flamini was a class act from start to finish.
He has been a true star for Arsenal all season. He's not one of the names that grabs headlines week-in, week-out, but if Arsenal are going to challenge for the Premier League title and the Champions League, he is going to play a pivotal part.
When the Gunners drew 0-0 at home in the first-leg I thought it was a good result and so it proved.
In European football it is important not to concede at home and as Rangers have proved in the UEFA Cup, it can set you up for the second-leg because the home team then has to push forward and go for victory.
You don't always get what you deserve in football but I was delighted to see Arsenal get the result.
They've had a few wobbles lately but this showed they are still a force to be reckoned with.
Manchester United made it through to the next round but there was no shock in their victory.
Okay, it was only 1-0 but they won at a canter.
This one was never in any doubt.
Lyon didn't have much of the play but you always felt if they did manage to score on the night, United had enough in their locker to score another two or three.
Everything seems to be coming together for them at the perfect time of the season and I think they will continue to get stronger.
With Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez playing so well at the moment I don't think there will be a side in Europe who will fancy being drawn against them.
Chelsea made it a hat-trick for English clubs will a comfortable win against Olympiakos.
Avram Grant has them scoring a few goals and although the Greek side weren't the strongest in the competition, it was still a great performance.
Jose Mourinho tried to win the Champions League in his three years at Stamford Bridge without much success but I'm sure there will be a few people quietly confident this year.
The only British club to lose out were Celtic.
As I said in this column a few weeks ago, they probably missed their opportunity in the first-leg when they went in front twice.
But there is no disgrace in a narrow defeat at the Nou Camp.
I take my hat off to them for how they went about their business on Tuesday night and although they never really threatened too much in front of goal, they never made life easy for Barca.
Last season it was the eventual winners in AC Milan who knocked them out and there's ever chance lightening striking twice.
United pumped up for cup
Giant killing shocks are the thing that makes the FA Cup the best domestic cup competition in the world.
This season has seen its fair share as I am all too aware after Fulham were knocked out by Bristol Rovers but it is getting harder and harder for the so-called smaller teams to compete.
It's quarter-final time this weekend and Rovers are still in the cup which is a fantastic achievement for everyone concerned but they are not alone.
Barnsley are also still in there after upsetting Liverpool in the last round but the odds are stacked against them now that it's down to the last eight.
Perhaps more predictably however, Manchester United are still in the mix and they are involved in the only all-Premier League tie this weekend.
Portsmouth travel to Old Trafford and I think they will fancy their chances. They strung a number of away wins together in recent week which is no mean feat in the Premier League and
Harry Redknapp has always done well against United.
Normally you look for a home tie in the FA Cup but I think Pompey will be quietly happy to be going to the Theatre of Dreams.
But with the way United are playing at the moment I can't see Portsmouth getting much further this season.
They hammered Arsenal in the last round and they won't fear anyone.
It will be a good game but it's United for me this time.
Barnsley's victory over Liverpool has set up a home tie with Chelsea and I think it is the end of the road for the Championship club.
Chelsea are scoring goals for fun and although it won't be easy at Oakwell, I think they'll win convincingly but Barnsley will enjoy the pay day.
Bristol Rovers entertain West Brom and they will hope to get at least a draw.
West Brom are flying at the moment it could be the banana skin of the round but I think there will be a replay.
As for the other tie, Middlesbrough are at home to Cardiff and I think the Premier League side will come out on top.
Nou Camp is some stage for the Special One
So Jose Mourinho is ready to get back into football — well, bring it on.
Football has missed the charismatic Portuguese coach and it is going to be great to see him back on the touchline next season.
He dropped a few hints yesterday that he will be at a Champions League club and I don't think it takes a genius to work out he might be heading for Barcelona.
There's usually no smoke without fire and ever since he departed Chelsea, the rumours of him going to the Nou Camp have persisted.
I doubt think there'll be any shortage of takers when he does decide to dip his toes back into management, but I'm sure it will be a huge club.
You only have to look at his record with Porto and Chelsea to see what he will bring you.
In a word, that is success. The Champions League was achieved at Porto against all the odds in 2004 and ‘The Special One' gave Chelsea the title they'd been desperate for in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
When he talks, people tend to sit up and take notice.
Like him or loathe him, you tend to listen to what he has to say and you can see the close relationship he has with his players which can only be good for any potential new club.
I'm sure Chelsea will be worried about him coming back to bite them next season, and with good reason too.
I heard him saying he wanted to go back to Chelsea in the Champions League next season and "kill" them.
