Transfer News and Speculation: 8 July
Tuesday, 8 July 2008
Harry Kewell has issued a letter to Leeds United supporters in defence of his decision to join Galatasaray. Kewell signed for the Turkish club on Friday after leaving Liverpool.
The 29-year-old was with Leeds when two of the club's supporters, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, were stabbed to death prior to a Uefa Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in Istanbul in 2000.
"I chose the No 19 shirt when I signed for Galatasaray as a sign of respect for Leeds because that was the number I got when I first became a regular member of the Leeds starting XI," he wrote. "I felt that it might be a way to demonstrate that I had not forgotten where it all started and I was hoping that in a small way it would help the healing process of the tragedy that occurred on the 5th of April 2000."
Ince adds Knox to backroom staff
Blackburn Rovers have confirmed the addition of Archie Knox, 61, to new manager Paul Ince's backroom staff.
The former Scotland assistant manager left Bolton, where he worked under Sammy Lee and was then part of Gary Megson's staff as the club secured their Premier League status, at the end of last season. Ince played at United when Knox worked as part of Sir Alex Ferguson's management team.
Knox said: "It is another great opportunity to work not only in the Premier League, but for a manager I have known for many years. Today is a meet everyone sort of day and we are well aware of the high quality of player in the Rovers squad."
Spurs' Forecast moves to Saints
Southampton have completed the signing of rookie Tottenham goalkeeper Tommy Forecast for an undisclosed fee. The 21-year-old passed a medical at St Mary's and has signed a five-year deal. Forecast had few first-team opportunities at White Hart Lane, although he was a reserve squad regular. "I'm really pleased it's all sorted," he said. "It's taken a while because Tottenham did not really want to let me go."
Cole Forest dream comes to fruition
Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Andy Cole, 36, following his release by Sunderland. The striker has agreed a 12-month contract with his hometown club and said: "One of my mates asked me whether I would join Forest if they got promoted to the Championship. I told him I would do my best and here I am. It's a dream come true. I always said that one day I would play for Forest."
Retired Romario courted by minnows
San Marino champions Murata are hoping to coax former Brazil striker Romario out of retirement for their Champions League qualifying round tie against Gothenburg on 15 July. Murata recruited fellow Brazilian World Cup winner Aldair for last year's Champions League campaign and he is poised to turn out again against the Swedes.
