Cardiff chasing Healy, Davis for Gers
Wednesday, 13 August 2008
Northern Ireland star David Healy has emerged as a target for Championship outfit Cardiff City.
The Welsh side are ready to make Fulham an offer of £1.2 million to land the 29-year-old striker.
Fulham could be in for a busy period because, as revealed in yesterday’s Belfast Telegraph, Rangers are set to move in on midfielder Steve Davis, who was such a big hit at Ibrox last season when he was on loan from Roy Hodgson’s team.
With their financial clout boosted by the £7.8million sale of Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa yesterday, Gers boss Walter Smith will now look to strengthen a midfield area which is lacking depth with captain Barry Ferguson currently out injured.
The lack of European football at Ibrox this season won’t influence the decision made by Davis about making a return to Glasgow when as expected Rangers finally agree a fee with Fulham for the player.
The Gers crashed out of the Champions League to Lithuanian side Kaunas last week and stumbled to a 1-0 win in the opening Scottish Premier League game of the season at Falkirk last weekend.
Manager Smith wants Davis in his line-up to face Hearts this weekend as he attempts to end Celtic’s three-year hold on the SPL title, so business could be done very quickly.
Wolves manager Dave Jones is also keen on landing Healy, who after the arrivals of Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson to the Cottage, has found himself now slipping down the pecking order.
Recently, the Northern Ireland record goalscorer has stated that he was willing to stay and fight for his place but with regular first-team football on offer at Cardiff, he may well be tempted, especially with Fulgham willing to sell.
Meanwhile Northern Ireland striker Martin Paterson scored twice in Burnley’s fine 2-0 win over Bury in the Carling Cup last night.

In all honesty I don't think David Healy has the pace, strength or height to play in the premier division. He has a quick mind and is very good off the ball.
David needs to be in a team that looks to him to score the goals. He needs the service from other players around him. In Fulham that is never going to happen. The team has been so messed about and is so unsettled most of the forwards are trying to make a name for themselves to stay in the team. They are not looking for Healy they want to score themseleves. For example Jimmy Bullard Danny Murphy both midfield players who will shoot or carry the ball before passing it to any striker let alone Healy. Hodgson who doesn't rate Steve Davis but highly rates Danny Murphy is an old fool. He will fall by the wayside with his new signings.

I think as an irishman living in australia, you're all missing the point a little with David healy. to be growing up wi 82 and 86 as your youth, and getting older and hoping one day that i can actually go and watch norn iron in a major tournament, he has become a bit of a revelation. Sure we're rubbish, old 1st/2nd division players etc etc, but to be living here in Oz and although not realistic but still possible, we took the last game in qualifying down to the last game. I tell my other aussie, scots and english mates the craic. We beat Spain, Sweden, Demnark and not forgetting england previously, and just missed out. Go Healy and the rest of the squad, not a great squad, but a team i believe in and they play for me as a supporter. by the way, the man we all hail as our hero? Gerry Arnstrong. Personally, a legend. but he played for watford, spurs, didn't really do much. Maybe Healy will be the same. drop a division, play your football, enjoy the game and get norn iron to SA. good luck

Oh dear Barlow.
Despite the warning signs at Leeds Sanchez too was guilty of rotating, even playing wide of a front 3 in some games and when Hodgson came in he rarely got a chance. Im not saying their were any guarentees he would definately have been a success by imo he didnt get the chance he required in that he needed to play week in week out as a central striker. Bearing in mind also he was playing for a poor fulham side were play was not based round him as it is for NI.
As for one season wonder lol. You do know Healy had scored 20 goals before the campaign dont you ?
He has scored against some of the best defences Europe has to offer. He didnt become a bad player just because things didnt work out at Fulham.

Agree with Barlow - Healy is overrated. Can't get regular football at Fulham. That speaks volumes about his premiership credentials.

Your a cheery chap aren't you Barlow, nothing like supporting our local sportsmen eh. "one qualifying euro season wonder", what do you want, ejit!

Healy should go he has proved he can't cut the mustard in the premiership, if he was worth his salt he would have been playing for a team like fulham every week.
Strikers are judged on goals. How many has healey scored in the big league?
Sanchez gamble of turing fulham into Northern Ireland back fired.
Northern Ireland one qualifying euro season wonder.

I would rather David play and score every week in the Championship than warming the bench at Fulham. As they say, its better to be a big fish in a small sea than a small fish in a big sea! It may feel like taking a step back for David but personally I would see being in the starting 11 every week as a step forward. And who knows? Maybe he can move back up to the Premiership on promotion.
