Cathcart ready to shine for Manchester United
Friday, 31 July 2009
Craig Cathcart is hungry for a first-team debut at Manchester United after staking his claim in pre-season.
The Northern Ireland under-21 captain was thrown into United’s friendly against Boca Juniors on Wednesday night and won high praise from Sir Alex Ferguson after helping his side secure a 2-1 success.
Now Cathcart is hoping to emulate Jonny Evans by breaking into the Old Trafford first-team squad after impressing on-loan at Plymouth Argyle last season.
“I've been out on loan in the last couple of seasons, so hopefully I might get to stick around this year and get amongst the squad and get a few games,” he said.
“I'd like to see what happens. We've got a big squad and the manager will know which players to pick. I played at Norwich on Saturday with the reserve team, then to fly over here and play in this brilliant stadium against good opposition was a good challenge and I really enjoyed it.
“It was a tough match. Boca Juniors are a different club to who you play against in the Premier League and overall it was nice to win. With great players around you, it makes you more comfortable and hopefully I fitted in quite well.”
