Chelsea could hit Ashley Cole with suspension and fine
Monday, 22 February 2010
Ashley Cole faces a possible suspension and will be fined by Chelsea following the latest sleazy allegations concerning the England defender’s private life.
The Premier League leaders are to consider taking the unprecedented step because Cole has apparently broken the club’s strict code of conduct just days after it was laid out to them, in no uncertain terms, by chief executive Ron Gourlay last week.
Cole, who is currently sidelined with a fractured ankle, is to be called before an internal disciplinary hearing following the latest revelations, which include claims the player used unwitting club officials to cover up alleged infidelity during the club’s pre-season tour to America last summer.
The very least he can expect is a fine of two weeks’ wages, around £200,000.
Gourlay held a meeting with the squad on Wednesday at which he made it clear any more scandals that tarnish Chelsea’s image would face “severe disciplinary consequences”. The players were also issued with a letter that spelled out exactly what is required from them. Gourlay’s name was on the letter, but it was made clear the order had come from owner Roman Abramovich.
The Russian is said to have grown tired of hearing scurrilous stories about the private lives of Cole and captain John Terry.
He ordered Gourlay to tell the whole squad that no one would be immune from club discipline, irrespective of their status in the club, a warning clearly directed at Cole and Terry.
Newspapers yesterday alleged that Cole sneaked a girl back to his Seattle hotel room last July.

This is no justification of Cole's behaviour, but surely if Chelsea do that with Cole, they will have to do it with Terry.
