First Windsor, now Robinho for Cech
Thursday, 11 September 2008
Chelsea superstar Petr Cech stopped Northern Ireland and now he is intent on keeping Brazilian ace Robinho at bay.
After keeping a clean sheet for the Czech Republic at Windsor Park last night in the 0-0 draw, Cech has turned his attention to the Saturday showdown between the two richest clubs in the planet when Chelsea travel to Manchester City.
City, of course, swooped on deadline day to sign Robinho from Real Madrid for £32.5 million – a British transfer record.
Previously it had appeared as though Robinho had set his heart on a move to Stamford Bridge.
Clearly the switch to City did not go down well at Chelsea.
“In the morning he (Robinho) said he loved Chelsea but then a few hours later he joins another club,” said Cech in Belfast last night.
“We want to show him he made the wrong decision.
“He is a great player and will entertain in the Premier League but we will see how he copes with the pressure.”
As for last night’s game, Cech was happy to secure a point.
“We knew it would be a difficult and while we would have liked all three points, we can accept one.”
In the other Group Three games Poland earned their first victory of the campaign winning 2-0 in San Marino.
It was a struggle for the Poles though, who drew 1-1 with Slovenia on Saturday. Goals from Euzebiusz Smolarek and Robert Lewandowski took them to the top of the table, ahead of Slovenia on goal difference, who beat Slovakia 2-1.
