Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez issues Xabi Alonso ultimatum to Real Madrid
Tuesday, 28 July 2009
Rafa Benitez has given Real Madrid 48 hours to complete their proposed transfer of Xabi Alonso, or the deal’s off for good.
Benitez has made it clear he doesn’t want the midfielder to leave and while reports have suggested the Spain star would like a return to his homeland, his boss has taken a firm stance as he insists he doesn’t want the long-running saga to deflect from his preparations for the Reds title challenge.
That could mean that the deal is off as Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claims he is ready to walk away from deals this summer if asking prices remain high.
Liverpool are reported to want £30million for Alonso, substantially above Real's valuation.
“Some people obviously thought that because we said we wanted more Spanish players, they could ask for fees which don't correspond to reality,” said Perez.
“A year ago, certain players we've asked about would have cost less than half the price we're being quoted now.”

Who can understand Madrid? They say the player is one of a few who do the job then say they don't want to pay the price. The price is high because Liverpool do not want to sell. Don't they have ears to hear? Liverpool do not want to sell. But they will!

By paying 80 Million for Ronaldo, Perez has pushed up the going rate for any half decent player, so he cant complain about Benitez wanting a mere £30M for Alonso's rare talents. I would like Alonso to stay but if not, Liverpool will need that sort of money to bring in someone capable of filling his shoes. Fair exchange is no robbery.

Real set the benchmark,,how can they complain about over inflated prices when the made the biggest contribution to inflating prices in the first place. Alonso is a LFC player on a long contract,,If you really want him then pay the asking price, he is the best player in his position bar none,,all this from a club who paid 80 million for ronaldo lol

As a Liverpool fanatic I don't want to see Alonso go, but Rafa is doing what Martin ONeill tried to do last year with the Barry saga. The only deadline there is is the transfer deadline at the end of August. Though Alonso has longer left on his contract than Barry did, which strengthens Rafas hand a bit.

Some people obviously think that if they tell us they want to buy one of our best player, we should jump in the air and ship him of for whatever they want to pay.
Yeaaa... really make sense

Make up your mind BT. Last week you reported a move was nailed on. Anyone would think you haven't a clue what you're on about....

Hey Perez, you set the trend by paying a ridiculous 80M deal for Ronaldo..so you sow what you reap!!
Liverpool does not want to sell...and thats it!! if you want to buy then show the money. No money no honey

It is very possible that the fact Alonso is Spanish contributes to this "rigorous debate" on his worth . Real spend more than twice their offered amount for each of two NON-Spanish players . Now could this be that they have been warned by the Spanish FA to keep down the money for home-talent so as to not upset the rest of Spanish clubs trading within Spanish clubs/players ?
Just a thought but I do think something like this is involved .
