Liverpool's defeats this season

Wednesday, 21 October 2009

Liverpool have lost four matches in a row and suffered six defeats in 13 matches in all so far this season.

August 16, Tottenham (a), lost 2-1

Summer signing Sebastien Bassong grabbed the winner for Tottenham as the London side, tipped to challenge the established big four this season, jolted Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

August 24, Aston Villa (h), lost 3-1

A 4-0 win at home to Stoke had raised hopes that the loss to Spurs was just a blip, but this home setback was worrying. An own goal from Lucas and further goals from Curtis Davies and Ashley Young meant Villa were comfortable winners at Anfield.

September 29, Fiorentina (a), lost 2-0

Liverpool had squeezed out a 1-0 home win against Debrecen in their Champions League opener, but this was a night to forget in Florence. Two goals from Fiorentina's teenage striker Stevan Jovetic sank the Reds, who were well beaten.

October 4, Chelsea (a), lost 2-0

Having won at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League last season, Liverpool were seeking a repeat but goals from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda made it a dismal day in the capital for Rafael Benitez's team.

October 17, Sunderland (a), lost 1-0

The 'beach ball' goal which condemned Liverpool to defeat at the Stadium of Light will linger in the memory and it was tough for the visitors to take. Darren Bent's strike hit the ball which had been thrown by a Reds fan and deflected past Jose Reina for a fluke winner, but Sunderland should have had more goals, so poor were their visitors.

October 20, Lyon (h), lost 2-1

Liverpool looked poised to end their three-game losing run after Yossi Benayoun fired them ahead. However, substitutes Maxime Gonalons and Cesar Delgado grabbed late goals to turn the match around and heap the pressure on Benitez heading into Sunday's league game against Manchester United.

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
