Manchester United star Evans linked with £12m Barcelona move
Wednesday, 5 August 2009
Jonny Evans is being lined-up for a stunning summer exit from Manchester United.
And the Northern Ireland defender may be about to follow Cristiano Ronaldo out by swapping Old Trafford for Spain.
Evans last night emerged as a target for European champions Barcelona and it is believed that the Spanish giants are ready to tempt United with a £12 million offer for the 21-year-old.
Also on the move to Spain last night was Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso after Real Madrid agreed to pay £30 million for the player.
United manager Ferguson turned down a £10 million offer for Evans from then Sunderland manager Roy Keane this time last year.
How tempted he would be to collect just £2 million more 12 months later for a player who enhanced his already growing reputation during his 30 appearances last season remains to be seen.
Nou Camp boss Pep Guardiola is understood to have turned his attentions to Evans after being told that there was no chance of a move for United’s Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic being successful.
Back in May Evans was on the bench as United lost to Barca in the Champions League final. It was against Spain that Evans made his Northern Ireland debut three years ago, when just 18.

Evans is expected to win his 18th cap in next Wednesday’s friendly against Israel at Windsor Park — and he could do so as a Barcelona player.
Although Barca won the Spanish League and Cup as well as the Champions League last season, they have been left behind in the summer spending stakes by Madrid.
Since Florentino Perez returned as President of Real they have splashed out £80m on Ronaldo, £68m on Brazilian star Kaka, £30m for Karim Benzema, £13m on Raul Albiol as well as paying Liverpool £3.5m for Alvaro Arbeloa just last week.
The capture of Alonso will take their summer spending to over £200 million, while Barca have signed only Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a deal worth £60 million.

Thanks for that incisive contribution, Brizo.
Hard luck yesterday. Still nice to start the season the way you mean to go on-beat again and blaming the referee-again!

In reply to 'United and nothing'
Salford Utd are in terminal decline as Ferguson remains too loyal to yesterday's men (Granda Giggs, Scholes and Neville) while younger stars like Ronaldo and Tevez move on up.
Fairweather fans such as you only know the good times and are deluded in thinking that you have a divine right to (and I quote you) 'aver' get into the Champions League
'Red Till I die'?
Red Face till you die more like, mate

Come on man wise up...... For a "sinking Ship" - we're doin a hell of a lot better than your stay afloat (just about) team.....
What was our point about getting beaten by a better team in the CL Cup Final - I'll admit that.... Champions League Final - You can only hope and pray that you'll aver get into the Champions League let alone get to the final of it.....
You can - and I quote "isperse" all the facts you want it'll never change the fact that the team you you hate, but in fact it's actually envy, will always be a better than the team you elect to follow.... Aim low and you'll never be too disappionted...... Thats the motto for City.....
Red Till I Die.....

Oh Dear, I seem to have hit a raw nerve with nervous United 'fans' (sheep?) who, like Setanta Sports and Boyzone, know that their best days are behind them. I'll kindly ispense four facts for local Man Yoo fans, free of charge-
1) United WERE hammered by Barca in the CL Final.
2) 2 of Salford's finest stars, Ronaldo and Tevez, have since deserted the sinking ship for clubs with more potential.
3) You don't get any League points for winning pre-season friendlies in Outer Mongolia.-not yet anyway.
4) There's only one MANU in Manchester and that's ADEBAYOR!!

kinkladze - Here are 2 results guaranteed to warm the cockles of your little heart -
Rangers 3 - Man City 2
and just to top it off
Manchester United 2 - Valencia 0
So much for the feeder club, they seem to be doing OK so far..... As far City...... I'll leave that to the their fans to come up with an excuse - oh sorry wrong turn of phrase - I mean explain.....

kinkladze - "United are now seen as a feeder club for Real Madrid and Man City" - Man City bought Tevez from United, so now we're a feeder club... - Catch yourself on man dear....
And as for this pearl of wisdom - "United were already a team in decline when Barcelona hammered them in the last Champions League Final." I'll tell you this for nothing... I'd rather be a club in decline going for an unprecedented fourth Premiership title this season than a second rate wannabe club like City who are only going to do well this season because they have the money now to do what Chelski did in previous seasons....
You know that it's the truth - and it hurts......
Red till the end

It would be a move upwards for Evans. United were already a team in decline when Barcelona hammered them in the last Champions League Final. That decline has accelerated sharply over the summer with an exodous of players highlighting the fact that United are now seen as a feeder club for Real Madrid and Man City.
Fergie faces a struggle to be the top team in Manchester this season, never mind the top team in Europe. Taxi for Evans!!!

Should he warm the bench in Manchester or in Barcelona? It is a difficult decision.

This is a joke of a top story. The BT has just taken some english tabloids stupid rumour and turned it into a full headline story. Are the work experience editors in today or is this typical BT journalism?

Rubbish. Ferguson will never let him go. Do you just pick names out of a hat and make a story about it.
Posted by Pete | 05.08.09, 13:35 GMT
Er, this is the 'top news' story why?
Posted by SM | 05.08.09, 13:27 GMT
Utter rubbish!

More like "Evans agent begins contract negotiations."

I don't like Evans that much I'd be quite happy to take 12 mil for a player we barely play !
