Ramos admits fears for future after Tottenham reach new low

Monday, 20 October 2008

Juande Ramos has overseen the worst-ever start to a Tottenham league season and the Spanish coach admitted yesterday that he was "worried" about his future at the club. With a contract at Spurs until 2011, Ramos said that he did not expect to meet with chairman Daniel Levy this week.

Juande Ramos has overseen the worst-ever start to a Tottenham league season and the Spanish coach admitted yesterday that he was "worried" about his future at the club. With a contract at Spurs until 2011, Ramos said that he did not expect to meet with chairman Daniel Levy this week.

"I'm worried because I don't like the situation," Ramos said. "Last season we won the Carling Cup and all the people were very happy. Now they are very sad because they don't like the situation. We need to work hard to change the situation, only working hard will do that."

Ramos said that Levy was "very busy" and no meeting was planned with him before the team travel to Italy on Wednesday for their Uefa Cup group game against in-form Udinese. "When I speak to him it's when he permits us to speak," Ramos said.

"He is a very busy man. In twenty years in the game I have had a lot of experiences in football – some good and some bad.

"[The responsibility lies with] all the people who work in the club. It starts with me and finishes with the last person. Everyone here has responsibility when we win and when we lose. I have confidence because when we played against Chelsea away [1-1] we played well and got a point. In the first half [against Stoke] we conceded a goal from a penalty, then we pulled it back. After their second goal it was difficult but the attitude of the players is very good."

The referee, Lee Mason, will include in his report an incident after the first penalty award when Gareth Bale was dismissed for a foul on Tom Soares. A coin was thrown at one of his assistants – presumably from the Spurs fans – although there was no further information.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis sympathised with Ramos. "I hope they back him and give him the opportunity to turn it around," he said. "They are in trouble and the manager they got rid of last time [Martin Jol] was a very popular manager. This lad has fallen on a rough time, so let's see some character from the board and see them back him."

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
