Sanchez faces axe as Fayed loses his patience
Friday, 14 December 2007
The former Northern Ireland boss is coming under increasing pressure at
Craven Cottage, just eight months after walking out on the international
post to take over from Chris Coleman.
Fulham have won just two
league games this season - both at home - and Sanchez is expected to be out
of a job early next week unless they earn a win against Newcastle.
Harrods boss and Fulham owner Al Fayed is understood to have lost patience
with Sanchez, who he handed a substatial transfer fund in the summer.
Just under than £10million of that was spent on Northern Ireland quartet Chris
Baird, Aaron Hughes, Steve Davis and David Healy, who all performed so well
for him in the international stage.
A further £6million went on
striker Diomansy Kamara, but he has been a major flop and hasn't even come
close to justifying that price tag.
With the January transfer
window looming Sanchez is hoping to have more money to spend in order to
stave off relegation, but with only goal difference separating them from the
relegation zone, his 22nd game as a Premier League manager may be the last.
It is only just over a week ago that Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce was
himself coming under intense pressure, but a home draw against Arsenal
followed by victory against Birmingham City has lifted the mood at St James'
Park.
If the Magpies boss follows up those results with victory at
Fulham then Sanchez will be the next Premier League manager to get the boot
rather than him.
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is the
current bookies favourite to be next to go, with Sanchez second.
