Taylor prepared to fight with Hart

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Maik Taylor hopes he has done enough to impress Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish and retain his place for their next Premier League game against Liverpool next Monday.

Taylor lost his place this season to England goalkeeper Joe Hart who has not been impressive of late and Taylor kept a clean sheet in Sunday’s draw with Manchester City — a game Hart was unable to play in as he is on loan from the Sky Blues.

“I was disappointed I didn’t start the season and I got an opportunity because Joe can’t play against his own team,” said Taylor.

“I’d like to think I had a decent game and see where that takes us.

“I will just knuckle down and work hard through the course of the week and see what happens and hopefully it will go for me otherwise I will have to keep working hard and wait for another opportunity.

“We can only keep a clean sheet — I’ve done that and hopefully the manager has something to think about.”

Taylor does not like playing second fiddle to Hart, but if he doesn’t play at Anfield he will continue to be the model professional.

He said: “I won’t be banging doors down — as much as I want to play I won’t achieve much by that.

“Only time will tell, but I will obviously prepare myself in the meantime.”

The Birmingham City dressing room was downbeat after the game as the players thought they deserved to take all three points against the big spenders especially after James McFadden’s missed penalty.

“We controlled it second-half; first-half it was end to end and as 0-0 draws go it was a good spectacle,” said Taylor.

“There were lots of chances from both sides. We are disappointed not to take all three points, but we’re still on course with 11 points from 11 games.”

Birmingham’s new owner, Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung has pledged to make at least £20m available for Alex McLeish in January and according to Taylor the whole club is buzzing.

“There is a lot of talk going and if they are talking about signing bigger and more quality players were are all fighting for our positions,” he said.

“We need to produce otherwise bigger and better players will come in. Everyone is excited and looking forward to the future.”

It will be an injustice if Maik Taylor doesn't keep his place against Liverpool and beyond that. He's a far superior goalkeeper than Joe Hart.
