TeleBest: Best transfer deals ever
Sammi Hyypia (Willem II to Liverpool, £2.6m 1999)
Went on trial to Newcastle a couple of years earlier, but they weren't interested so he ended up shoring up Liverpool's backline for a decade, picking up domestic and European glory as he went. A reliable rather than spectacular player, but not a bad buy for a player recommended to the club by a TV cameraman.

For some clubs, splashing the cash on established stars will guarantee success. For others, it's a matter of sniffing out the bargains, making the gambles and backing hunches.

Of course it is all about opinions

My opinion would be that Cantona to Man United was the second best ever transfer only behind Dalglish from Celtic to Liverpool

Worst has got to be Souness buying George Weah's cousin when he was at Southampton and then putting him on as a sub and having to sub the sub because he was that bad!!!!

Nicolas Anelka has had so many transfers and generated so much cash Arsene Wenger who made a cool 20 million on him called him not a footballer but a bank!!!

My mum phoned me at school, this was before mobile phones, to let me know that Mr Cantona left my beloved Leeds United to join 'them' for a mere £1.2m. I had to give a good excuse to my Physics teacher upon my return to class. I'm still in shock!

What a great player he was and congrats to Sir Alex on a wonderful piece of business, probably the best ever in British football by a long way.

Billy on the Box: DD’s big pair puts on blue show in Bavaria

What an epic battle the Champions League Final turned out to be. A clash between an organisation with a long and distinguished history, respected by friend and foe alike up against a relative newcomer, the plaything of a foreign oligarch, who is universally viewed with raised eyebrows.
