Terry Venables slams 'poisonous' Berbatov
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

Dimitar Berbatov will be hoping for a good performance for Manchester United in the Champions League tonight
Dimitar Berbatov hasn’t exactly set the world alight since his £30 million move to Manchester United.
But when you have just been labelled a “poisonous presence” by an ex-England manager, tonight’s Champions League clash in Denmark with Aalborg might be a good time to start.
Berbatov was billed as the “new Eric Cantona” when he joined United from Tottenham last month, but he has been more Ralph Milne than the audacious Frenchman. A passenger rather than the driving force.
Sir Alex Ferguson remains confident, however, that the Bulgarian will come good.
He should have plenty of motivation against Bruce Rioch’s side after being blasted by Terry Venables, who point blank has blamed Berbatov for Tottenham’s dreadful start to the season, which has left them bottom of the Premier League table.
Venables told The Sun: "Berbatov kept telling us he had 'a dream'. Well, good for you Dimi. You had a dream with a few extra noughts added to your bank balance.
"But did Spurs have a dream too? You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season, the brooding and the reluctance to play, has cost the club that believed in you."
No doubt Fergie will be as interested in those comments as Berbatov, who should feature tonight with the United manager promising to field his strongest side. Mind you, many United fans would tell that would not include Berbatov, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney leading a three-pronged attack.
Incidentally Rioch says an Aalborg win would be like an earthquake. Don’t expect the earth to move tonight.

If Berbatov was unsettling the Spurs dressing room, why did they not bloody sell him at the very beginning. People and media always have to find something or someone to blame for everthing that goes wrong. Its human nature..
Berba will be a United legend and Venables has shown a lot of disrespect to the guy whos done so much for them i.e. winning any piece of silverware since ages
By the way, it was be a very weak dressing room at Spurs if one single man can kill it on his own. I suppose we cannot compare Spurs to ManUtd..remember Nistelrooy, Beckham, Heinze etc and Ronaldo

I think that Berbatov was a waste of money at 30 million quid ,a lot of money for someone who sulks like a child at primary school.
To be honest , I think it was a knee-jerk reaction by Ferguson who saw the effect that the loss of the Real Madrid bound Ronaldo was having on United.
Man utd seem to be a one man team without Ronaldo.
Makes you think what will happen if Real Madrid finally succeed in a bid for Ronaldo.

Good on old El Tel. I knew he was Spurs through and through!!
Berbatov thinks he is bigger than everyone else and at Tottenham he was the best player but he seemed to think that he was too big for us and that he deserved to be playing Champions League football with Man Utd. Unfortunately, his performances have probably made Fergie wonder why he ever sold Louis Saha!!
I hope it all goes wrong for Berbatov and he ends up back in Bulgaria with SK Sofia!!
