Tottenham 3 Hull 0

Friday, 31 July 2009

Tottenham have won the Barclays Asia Trophy after comfortably beating Premier League rivals Hull at Beijing's Workers' Stadium today.

A brace from captain Robbie Keane and a late Aaron Lennon strike secured the win in a game Spurs dominated for almost the full 90 minutes.

The performance will be especially pleasing for boss Harry Redknapp given the game was Tottenham's fourth in a week, while it capped impressive displays from his strike force following Jermain Defoe's winner against West Ham on Wednesday.

The Londoners were lively from the start as Defoe's through ball in the fourth minute almost found Keane but Hull defender Steven Mouyokolo did enough to avert the danger.

They took the lead in the 16th minute when a fine pass from Luka Modric found Keane and the Republic of Ireland captain unleashed a right-foot strike that was too much for Hull stopper Tony Warner.

The Tigers attempted to reply four minutes later when former Spurs midfielder Dean Marney picked up the ball on the right side of the box but his pass across goal was collected by Heurelho Gomes.

Spurs continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides and had another chance in the 27th minute when Defoe latched onto a pass from Jermaine Jenas but the England striker's effort was saved by Warner.

The former Portsmouth player forged another opportunity soon after but this time Kamil Zayatte did well to block his attempt.

Marney brought a save out of Gomes 10 minutes before the break when he struck a powerful effort from the edge of the area that was well saved by the Brazilian shotstopper.

Spurs continued to dominate possession at the start of the second half, comfortably spraying passes across the pitch as they patiently built towards an opening.

But Hull defended well and even started to exert some pressure of their own upon the Tottenham defence when in the 63rd minute a corner was cleared as far as Geovanni, who volleyed back towards goal where Zayatte was on hand to divert a header that Gomes did well to palm behind.

However, Spurs added a second in the 68th minute after Defoe chased onto a ball from Tom Huddlestone inside the area and was brought down by Warner. The referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Keane stepped up to coolly fire home beyond Warner's left hand.

Spurs carved open the Hull defence two minutes before the end for their third as an unmarked Kyle Naughton crossed across the face of goal for the onrushing Lennon to fire home.
