Rangers 1 Aberdeen 1: Mervan Celik has told Rangers he will score goals and help them win games after watching his new club held to a 1-1 draw by Aberdeen in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

The Swedish attacking midfielder joined the Scottish champions on Friday and was in the stand at Ibrox for Saturday's game, which saw Rangers fall four points behind rivals Celtic.

Celik is confident he can make an impact once in the side.

He said: “I will bring goals, play well and help the team to win games.

“I can play on the left or the right but the coach will tell me where I will play.”

Celik says manager Ally McCoist — and what he achieved as a player for Rangers — was a big factor in his decision to move to Glasgow.

He added: “Rangers are a big club and they have fantastic supporters. They play for the titles every year and they play in Europe.

“The coach was a big player so I hope he can teach me a lot. That's why I came here.”

The 21-year-old made an appearance on the pitch before the game and was thrilled with the reception he received from the fans.

He said: “It was a little bit of a surprise to me but it was fantastic and I feel very good. It was amazing.”

On the game itself, he added: “It was okay but I think it can be much, much better.”

McCoist hopes his new recruit can back up his claims of delivering goals and hopes Celik — who has not played a competitive game since the end of the Swedish season — will be fit enough for next week's visit of Hibernian.

The Rangers boss said: “Hopefully he can stand by that statement because we are a little short on goals.

“Nikica Jelavic is our main striker and I feel we could, and probably should, be chipping in with goals from other areas. That wasn't the case [against Aberdeen].

“Although you need your strikers to be notching goals, there is no doubt that you need them to be coming from other areas if you're gong to be successful.

“The wee man can certainly chip in with goals, there's no doubt about that, whether he plays in the wider areas or just through the middle, so I would be very hopeful we can get him involved.

“He trained on Saturday morning and came through it fine but obviously he hasn't had a lot of game-time.

“I'll have a look at him next week and see if we feel he's ready to be involved for the Hibs game. But I would be hopeful he would be involved sooner rather than later.”

Aberdeen took the lead through Kari Arnason but the Dons were denied a first win at Ibrox in more than two decades when Maurice Edu levelled just four minutes later.

Arnason said: “We just tried to gain something from the long throws and set-pieces and we almost got away with it.

“But we let in a sloppy goal, although they were probably the better team.

“All in all, I thought it was quite a good team performance from us because it's always tough coming here.”
