Rangers 1-0 Falkirk: Rangers start season with narrow win

Andrius Velicka's goal has given Rangers a 1-0 win at Falkirk in the opening game of the SPL season.

The victory comes days after Rangers' early exit from the Champions League.

Rangers conceded a penalty after 54 minutes but Michael Higdon's shot was pushed wide by Allan McGregor.

The goal came after 64 minutes when Boyd's flick found Lafferty on the right, who provided a low pass across the face of goal.

Lithuanian striker Velicka provided the simple tap in from close range.

Falirk failed to find the goal despite having put in a good afternoon's work.

The victory comes days after Rangers' early exit from the Champions League.

Rangers manager Walter Smith said: "We got little break when they missed the penalty and then got the goal.

"It was important for us to get off to a good start especially after what happened in midweek."

Champions Celtic defend their title tomorrow at home to St Mirren.

Goals: Velicka 64.

Booked: Dailly, Whittaker, Lafferty.

Attendance: 6,669.
