Rangers 1-0 Falkirk: Rangers start season with narrow win

Andrius Velicka scored the winning goal for Rangers against Falkirk in the in the opening game of the SPL season

Andrius Velicka's goal has given Rangers a 1-0 win at Falkirk in the opening game of the SPL season.

The victory comes days after Rangers' early exit from the Champions League.

Rangers conceded a penalty after 54 minutes but Michael Higdon's shot was pushed wide by Allan McGregor.

The goal came after 64 minutes when Boyd's flick found Lafferty on the right, who provided a low pass across the face of goal.

Lithuanian striker Velicka provided the simple tap in from close range.

Falirk failed to find the goal despite having put in a good afternoon's work.

The victory comes days after Rangers' early exit from the Champions League.

Rangers manager Walter Smith said: "We got little break when they missed the penalty and then got the goal.

"It was important for us to get off to a good start especially after what happened in midweek."

Champions Celtic defend their title tomorrow at home to St Mirren.

Goals: Velicka 64.

Booked: Dailly, Whittaker, Lafferty.

Attendance: 6,669.
