Smith deal must be priority for Rangers, says McCoist

Saturday, 1 May 2010

Ally McCoist has called for club bosses to hold talks with the Rangers management team as soon as possible in a bid to end the uncertainty hanging over the Scottish champions.

Manager Walter Smith has yet to confirm whether he will remain at Ibrox to defend the Scottish Premier League title which was secured last week.

The veteran boss has been unable to sign any players in the last three transfer windows and wants money to spend in the summer if he does stay.

According to McCoist whose side travel to Dundee United today, Smith has yet to receive any assurances from those running the club, with the search for a potential new owner as yet unresolved, but the assistant boss insists answers must be forthcoming before the new campaign.

“I would sincerely hope something would be finalised by then,” he said.

“It would be a concern for everybody involved had we not been made clearer on the situation before the start of the season.

“We haven't been given any assurances at all. We haven't been told anything. I don't think Walter has either.”

Rangers Majority shareholder Murray said yesterday: "There are limited funds available to strengthen the team, which is necessary and the board are drawing up a business plan for that."

Meanwhile Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies has revealed he would fancy the Ibrox job.

He said: "I'm very open minded regarding the future. I would love to someday manage Rangers.”
