GAA: Bryansford shock Duff in last 16
Bryansford certainly put the cat among the pigeons when they overcame Clonduff in the Down Senior Football Championship.
Reduced to 14 players just before the break, Bryansford also conceded a penalty which Shane Ward converted for the Hilltown side yet the Newcastle outfit still managed to come out on top.
Clonduff were without Aidan Carr who is currently in the US and his absence was felt up front.
Bryansford's next assignment will be in the quarter-finals on Saturday when they face near neighbours Loughinisland at Downpatrick (6pm).
Bryansford are a potent mix of youth and experience with young guns like Joe Ireland and Ciaran Brannigan, who were in the Down squad that won the All Ireland Minor football two years ago, merging with players like Simon Poland and Chris Brannigan.
Joe Ireland, indeed, was a member of the St Louis, Kilkeel, side that came agonisingly close to landing the Bank of Ireland MacRory Cup two years ago when Martin Clarke, now a full-time Australian Rules player, was also in the side.
Reigning Down champions Mayobridge will meet Rostrevor at Burren on Friday and the title-holders will be without Michael Lively because of suspension.
However, they expect to have their big guns ? Michael Walsh, Benny Coulter and Robbie Coulter ? in attack.
Kilcoo have also thrust themselves into the reckoning and they will meet Longstone at Newcastle tomorrow (6.45pm).
