All Ireland Qualifiers: McGeeney angry despite Kildare win over Leitrim
Kildare 1-12 Leitrim 0-06: Kildare remain a work in progress under Kieran McGeeney and his dissatisfaction with their performance despite recording a nine-point victory over a dogged Leitrim unit at rain-soaked St Conleth’s Park on Saturday night was telling.
He had no quibble with his players’ application, but this game was in the melting pot until James Kavanagh’s 59th minute goal put seven points between the teams.
Apart from that, it took Kildare more than 20 minutes to open their account, while they were also held scoreless until the 15th minute of the second half.
Four of their first half points came in the last eight minutes to give them a 0-6 to 0-3 lead, and they notched up 1-4 in the closing 12 minutes of the encounter.
But a failure to score more points against a game but ultimately limited Leitrim unit did not impress McGeeney, regardless of the rain and wind.
“It was difficult conditions but the wrong options were taken in different times and they really could have killed the game off in both halves,” he expained.
