Gutsy Antrim boost promotion bid after beating London

Antrim 1-12 London 1-08

By Conor McLaughlin

Antrim remain in the promotion hunt in Division Four of the NFL after this close encounter with London at Toome.

It was a frenetic opening period with two goals and a red card inside the first nine minutes. The ball was in the Antrim net after 45 seconds when a Lorcan Mulvey free took a wicked deflection, and goalkeeper Chris Kerr could only deflect it into the path of Alan O'Hara, who fired to the net.

Antrim responded quickly with a fine Owen Gallagher point and then CJ McGourty saw his free come back off the upright and fall into the arms of Tomas McCann, who was pulled to the ground. McGourty sent the ball to the net.

However, the hosts were reduced to 14 men when Conor Burke kicked out at Paraic McGoldrick after he had fouled the London forward. With a man down, and playing into a stiff breeze, Antrim did well to maintain their one-point lead to the break.

Mulvey was the standout performer for London while McGourty and Michael Pollock proved potent for Antrim.

There was never more than two points between the sides until the closing stages when London began to lose discipline.

Black cards for Cathal Og Greene and Mark Gottsche allowed Antrim to pull away.
