Sorry Antrim are mauled by classy Kilkenny

Kilkenny 6-27 Antrim 0-19

By Tomas McGurk

Kilkenny turned in a dominant second half display to overrun Antrim by 26 points in the Walsh Cup at Abbottstown GAA centre yesterday.

Four second half goals decked the Saffrons and helped illustrate the gulf in class between the sides as the Cats all but guaranteed their semi-final berth in the pre-season competition.

Kilkenny set out their stall early with a goal from full-forward Jonjo Farrell following an excellent pass from Walter Walsh.

Neil McManus landed Antrim's opening score after five minutes but the Saffrons struggled in the opening 10 minutes.

Reid played a great through ball into the path of Richie Hogan, who in turn flicked the sliotar to midfielder Ollie Walsh who buried the ball into the side of the net.

Antrim, to their credit, got themselves back in the game midway through the half with some fine scores, including two from wing-back Conor McKinley.

Antrim thought they had drawn level when Conor Johnston teed up full-forward John Dillon to finish from close range. However, the Armoy clubman saw his goal ruled out for a square ball infringement.

Richie Hogan plundered Kilkenny's third major midway through the second half as the Cats ruthlessly targeted O'Connell's goal with every other attack.

A couple of Ciaran Clarke frees provided only a brief respite for the besieged Saffron rearguard as Richie Leahy scored his side's fourth goal. Antrim's misery continued when Farrell added a fifth.

The industrious McKenna brought his tally to 0-5 from play on the hour mark but the sixth goal arrived via Leahy late on as Kilkenny claimed an emphatic victory.
