Tally's triumph keeps him on write lines for more glory

By John Campbell

When St Mary's University College won the coveted Sigerson Cup against all the odds last month, they underlined that sporting romance is still blossoming. And further success has come the way of the west Belfast seat of learning now that coach Paddy Tally has just taken delivery of the Quinn Building Products Ulster GAA Writers' Association monthly merit award.

In beating warm favourites UCD in a tense final, St Mary's scaled a new peak, with Tally's tactical imprint very much on their triumph.

"We have been close for many years but never quite managed to get past the quarter-finals," reflects Tally. "We were determined to go the whole way this time and we did just that. We punched well above our weight, I felt."

Tally received an engraved Belleek Living Vase, specially designed and engraved silver cuff links from Carlingford Design House, training gear from O'Neill's International Sports, medical equipment from 3FiveTwo and two tickets to the UGAAWA Annual Awards presentation.
