Armagh could withdraw their request for a hearing to challenge the €5,000 fine imposed on them by the Central Competition Controls Committee because of the threat of losing home advantage for their next league match.

Armagh were hit with the fine - the same amount as Monaghan, who were punished for their part in a brawl against Kildare at Clones - for their involvement in a fracas with Cork during their drawn first-round league game earlier this month.

But after a Central Hearings Committee review of the case, Monaghan were ordered to play their next home league match against Louth at an away ground instead of paying the €5,000 fine. With Armagh due to play Mayo at the Morgan Athletic Grounds next, Armagh secretary Paddy Og Nugent admitted they were reviewing their position.

"We have requested a hearing, but after what happened Monaghan we will be talking about it. I hope the request can be withdrawn. If we had to go to Mayo, we'd be talking about accommodation, travel, more meals and much bigger expense than we reckoned on, far in excess of €5,000," he said. "I'm not saying that is going to happen but you have to look at Monaghan and consider the risk.

"On top of that there is 10pc lost on the gate and with a newly revamped ground we want as many games played here as possible."

Kildare and Cork will also be reviewing their intention to seek hearings instead of accepting proposed €5,000 fines for the melees their players were involved in.
