Gorman's late goal helps Armagh make big point

Armagh 1-13 - London 1-13

By John Campbell

They may have left it late at the Athletic Grounds yesterday but Armagh still managed to salvage a point after flirting with disaster against London in a keenly-contested Allianz Hurling League Division 2B encounter yesterday

The visitors appeared to be careering down the home straight when they led by 1-13 to 0-12, but in added time the home side plundered a goal through Caily Gorman which Eoin McGuinness garnished with a point to earn Sylvester McConnell's team a division of the spoils.

The manager, though, was forthright in assessing his steam's performance despite their late bonus.

"At times we didn't turn up, to be honest. But we still managed to show a lot of character.

"The fact of the matter is that we had to get something out of this game and we did that in the end.

"The players probably feel that it is a point dropped and I suppose we could have stolen it," said McConnell.

Armagh looked to be taking a firm grip on the game at the end of the first quarter when they led by 0-6 to 0-3 with Conor Corvan and David Carvill to the fore in the scoring stakes, but a Daryl Roberts goal for London following a 21st minute breakaway raid plunged the game back into the melting pot.

Armagh held a tenuous 0-8 to 1-4 interval lead and the sides were deadlocked 10 minutes into the second-half with the scores at 1-6 to 0-9.

It was then that London discovered a more clinical edge and between the 55th and 64th minutes they swept over five unanswered points with impressive substitute Kevin O'Loughlin grabbing three.

Yet just when it seemed they were on the point of surrender Armagh mounted a late burst of pressure and lively substitute Caily Gorman pounced for an important goal.

And it was left to another substitute, Eoin McGuinness, to flight over what proved to be the equalising point deep, deep into added time.
