UUJ go the extra mile to semi-final

Thursday, February 28, 2008

UUJ will now face Dublin Institute of Technology in the semi-finals of the Sigerson Cup tomorrow week in Carlow following their extra-time victory over great rivals Queen's at The Dub yesterday.

Indeed, Queen's looked to be on the verge of repeating their triumph in last year's final over the Jordanstown outfit when they led by one point in the closing stages of normal time.

But Antrim's Paddy Cunningham, who had been introduced as a substitute, whisked over the equalising point that sent the game into extra-time during which UUJ skipper Mark Lynch hoisted over three points to complement a fine fisted effort from Raymond Mulgrew and another from fit-again Peter Donnelly.

It was another Antrim player, Thomas McCann, who had fired UUJ into the driving seat with the only goal of the game earlier but Queen's worked hard and Down's Paul McComiskey, a target for AFL scouts, kept their hopes alive with seven points in all, four from frees, while Paul Courtney and Aodhan Gallagher also got through much good work.

But the UUJ strength, steel and finishing power surfaced in abundance in extra-time and they have now boosted their chances of lifting the trophy.

Club president John Farrell said afterwards: "It was a tough game against Queen's but we must now gear up for what will be a very difficult mission."

UUJ: M McAllister; C Harrison, D McCaul, D Morgan; P McGuigan, K Lacey (0-1), D Hughes; P Donnelly (0-1), J McGovern; R Mulgrew (0-2), T McCann (1-0), M Lynch (0-5, 0-2 frees), C Cavanagh, A Moran (0-3). Substitutes: P Cunningham (0-4, all frees), B McKenna, C Donnelly.

QUEEN'S: F Murphy (0-1, '45'); N Bogue, L Howard, H Gallagher; D O'Neill (0-1), J O'Kane, J Crozier (0-1); P Courtney (0-1), J Ireland (0-1), A Gallagher, J Loughrey, C McGinn; P McComiskey (0-7, 0-5 frees), S O'Neill (0-3), M O'Rourke (0-1).
