Cork v Kerry: revenge in the air for Rebels

By John Campbell
Saturday, 5 July 2008

When Cork managed to draw with Armagh in their last game of the National League, veteran midfield ace Nicholas Murphy hoped it would serve as an encouraging omen for their prospects in the Munster Championship.

Tomorrow, Cork play Kerry in the provincial final - again! - and Murphy believes that the Leesiders will now require to make an extra-special effort if they are to wrest the trophy from their neighbours.

Murphy himself has, somewhat surprisingly, been named at wing -forward for the Pairc Ui Chaoimh showdown but he's just happy to be involved.

"Any time you play Kerry you want to beat them. So I think the motivation is playing Kerry, no matter about last year," maintains Murphy who, like his colleagues, still harbours painful memories of the hammering Cork received in the last All Ireland final.

The Carrigaline clubman cannot put his finger on why the Rebels have performed so poorly on that occasion.

"It's still hard to explain," he admits.

The Cork team shows three changes from the one which scraped over Limerick in the semi-final. Last year's captain Derek Kavanagh earns a recall at midfield with Anthony Lynch and Kieran O'Connor both drafted into the half back line.

Derek Duggan has recovered from a leg injury to take his place at right corner back, while there are still no starting places for James Masters and Michael Cussen, both of whom came on as substitutes against Limerick.

Meanwhile, Donncha Walsh and Sean O'Sullivan are both included in the Kerry team.

Walsh (pictured left) finally makes his championship debut, replacing the suspended Paul Galvin while O'Sullivan comes in for his injured namesake Declan.

There are two other changes from the side that defeated Clare. All-Ireland under 21 winning captain Killian Young has recovered from a shoulder injury to replace Tommy Griffin at left half back, while Kieran Donaghy has shaken off a knee injury to regain the full forward slot from Tommy Walsh.

As expected, Darragh O Se has overcome a groin problem to take his place at midfield, while his younger brother Tomas captains the side from wing back in the absence of Galvin.

The raft of experience in the Kerry side will agin see them in the favourites' role for a game that could offer a further insight as to just where the Sam Maguire Cup could rest this year.
