Carlow have to scrap for win

Down 3-9 Carlow 3-11

Two goals and a point in a two-minute spell after half time were the scores which set up Carlow for this narrow victory over pointless Down at Mitchel Park, Ballygalget yesterday.

They achieved their win the hard way, having to play the final 20 minutes a man short following the dismissal of centre-half-back Eoin Nolan for a second yellow card offence. Down took a long time to get into the game and actually trailed by 1-2 to 0-3 after 15 minutes with Paudie Kehoe, Carlow’s prolific scorer finding the net after seven minutes.

The Down fight back started with goals from Gareth Johnson Conor O’Prey .

A brilliant long range free by right half back Simon Wilson, who was Down’s top scorer, went all the way to the net as Down led by 3-6 to 1-5 at the interval.

Carlow eventually found the scoring range. Paudie Kehoe finished a long range free by Robert Coady to the net.

Right from the puck out Carlow struck for another goal when Andrew Gaule levelled the game.

Points were exchanged before Carlow were reduced in playing numbers but they finished the stronger with a point from Robert Foley and a free by Shane Kavanagh for a deserved victory.
