Cavan hurlers withdraw

The Cavan hurling team has withdrawn from senior competitions for the remainder of this season.

The move follows the Breffni county's failure to fulfil a Lory Meagher Cup fixture against Fermanagh last weekend.

County chairman Tom Reilly told RTE Radio that poor attendances at training, a shortage of players and injury problems had combined to force the decision.

"We only have two clubs in the county so we would not have 60 players who would be able to compete at Allianz League level," said Reilly.

"Mullahoran is the only fully registered hurling club in the county and the other club is an amalgamation of players from all over the county which we put together for competition purposes.

"Of those 60 lads there was only 21 available to the manager for the game with Fermanagh and seven of those were injured.

The players themselves know that something has to be done and, together with Croke Park, we are going to come to a solution."
