Cavanagh to home in on special honour

Sean Cavanagh may have landed a shoal of individual awards since his heroics for Tyrone in their All Ireland triumph over Kerry but on Saturday he is set to be feted by the people who matter most to him.

The Moy Tir na Nog club will host a celebration banquet in the Armagh City Hotel at which members of the Cavanagh family along with his playing colleagues will be present for what promises to be an emotional occasion.

Cavanagh, who has scooped just about every honour on offer lately, has not only done Tyrone proud but skippered Ireland to their International Rules triumph over Australia.

He said: “To be going to my club function among my family and friends will be something special. Everyone is looking forward to the occasion.”

Also in line for special presentations are Cavanagh’s county team colleagues from the Moy club Ryan Mellon, Philip Jordan and his own brother Colm.

Moy spokesman Colin Mackle predicts that the banquet will be one of the biggest occasions in the long history of the Tir na nOg club.

“Obviously, given our input into Tyrone’s success and Sean’s part in particular in helping to bring the Sam Maguire Cup home for the third time, we certainly have something to celebrate,” says Mackle.

Meanwhile, Armagh Harps marked their 120th year in existence by hosting a similar gala ball on Saturday night last also in the City Hall.

Long-serving club stalwart Phil McGinn’s book depicting the progress which the club has made since its inception is already proving a best seller beyond the confines of the Orchard County.

And while Moy and Harps immerse themselves in the social sphere, Trillick keep their focus on a quadruple triumph.

They are currently in pursuit of the Ulster Intermediate Football title having landed the Tyrone League and Championship titles as well as the Reserve honours.

Indeed, it was Trillick who inflicted probably the only element of disappointment on Sean Cavanagh recently when they overcame Moy in the Tyrone Intermediate final - something of a surprise result.

Since then, Trillick have maintained their push for glory and having beaten Cavan champions Redhills last Sunday in the Ulster Intermediate quarter-fianl, they are now a step nearer glory.

But they are taking nothing for granted.

“We were underdogs against Moy and we have now got used tot hat role. But we are still upbeat and obviously it would be great if we could bring further honour to Tyrone,” said a spokesman for the club.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
