Colm can leave the Nire in mire

He may not have been able to produce his most potent form during this year's All Ireland Championship campaign for one reason or another but Colm Cooper is certainly turning on the style just now.

And that could bode ill for Waterford champions The Nire in Sunday's AIB Munster Club Football Championship final at Pairc Ui Caoimh on Sunday (2.00pm).

The Nire may have looked comfortable in overcoming Aherlow (Tipperary) in last Sunday's semi-final replay but this week-end they will confront a Dr Crokes side who can not only turn to the quicksilver Cooper but also have the formidable Eoin Brosnan in their line-up.

At the helm, too, is new Kerry manager Pat O Shea who hopes for a winning farewell to his management career at club level.

Dr. Crokes, who lost the Kerry final to South Kerry (the champions are ineligible for provincial action due to the divisional rule), had re-energised themselves for their Munster semi-final in which they turned in an excellent performance to beat favourites and defending champions, Nemo Rangers (Cork) by 2-10 to 0-10.

The mercurial Cooper scored 1-4 in that game, the kind of return which eluded him in his Kerry appearances during the summer.

The Nire are an amalgam of strength and skill but may find the Dr Crokes attack rather too potent, particularly if the Kingdom representatives gain a foothold at midfield.

The winners will meet newly-crowned Leinster champions Moorefield (Kildare) in the All Ireland Club semi-final but neither of the Munster finalists are looking that far down the line.

Moorefield have won the Leinster crown for the first time in their history and are particularly anxious to go on and add the All Ireland crown to their provincial prize.

Moorefield's fine 3-6 to 0-8 win over Offaly champions Rhode on Sunday has enhanced their credentials as possible All Ireland champions.

They are only the second Kildare club to have won the Leinster title and the first since Raheens were successful in 1981.
