Cookstown 1-06 Doohamlet 0-08

Cookstown scraped through to the Ulster Intermediate Championship final with a one point victory over Doohamlet at a chilly Brewster Park.

The Tyrone champions should feel that they were a shade fortunate not to be at least heading into extra time as the Monaghan men, who had full back Martin Hughes red carded midway through the second half, wasted a lot of possession in the last 10 minutes as they searched for an equaliser.

Cookstown enjoyed a dream start to the game as John Gilmore hit 1-01 inside the first few minutes to give his side a four-point lead. A well struck 50 was followed by a flicked goal after he reacted quickest to a long ball into the Doohamlet square.

But any thoughts the favourites might have had of an easy game were quashed as the Monaghan men came back to six points to Cookstown's one for the remainder of the half.

Indeed it could have been even better for Doohamlet had Marty Rea not pulled off a brilliant save to deny Shane McManus a goal. McManus did fetch the resultant 50 and fist a score to give his side the lead for the first time.

And when Ted Duffy extended that lead just after the break with a free kick things were looking ominous for Cookstown.

But they rallied for their best spell of the game and hit four points without reply to claim a two point lead.

Owen Mulligan with a pressure free kick from just outside the 50 got them going with Martin Murray, Conor Mullan and Gilmore adding to the scoresheet.

Doohamlet though had plenty of possession but they could not make it pay and had only a Paul McArdle point from a free to show for the remainder of the second half as Cookstown hung on to reach another Ulster Club Intermediate final.
