Cup glory for Tyrone

Saturday, 28 January 2012

Tyrone produced a sparkling second half performance to win their first Dr McKenna Cup title since 2007 with a 1-14 to 2-8 win over Derry.

The holders saw their challenge crumble following the 18th minute dismissal of midfielder James Conway.

Derry led by six points at one stage, but the Red Hands played some sparkling football in the second half, and would have had an even greater winning margin had Cailean O'Boyle not netted a late penalty.

Paddy Bradley grabbed a 16th minute Derry goal, but Owen Mulligan's goal helped Tyrone draw level at the break on 1-5 each.

Mattie Donnelly (0-3), Cathal McCarron and Stephen O'Neill all hit quality scores in the second half as the Red Hands triumphed.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
