Derry kids heap misery on Tyrone

Tyrone 1-07 Derry 1-14

Derry are through to an Ulster quarter final with Fermanagh after a richly deserved seven point success over Tyrone at Healy Park Omagh last night.

It was Derry who led 0-7 to 0-5 at the break but they should have been further in front as they kicked eight wides to their opponents two.

Aaron Kerrigan opened the scoring with a superb point from the right wing in the third minute but in the next attack Tyrone drew level with a well taken point from midfielder Mark McKenna.

James Kielt converted a Derry free but Niall McKenna levelled matters with a well taken score before Peter Harte put the Red Hands in front with a fine effort from distance.

A blistering forty metre run from Diarmuid McNulty ended with him splitting the posts but then Derry took over.

Emmett McGuckian pointed from play with Kielt knocking over a free before impressive midfielder Caolan O’Boyle hit the target. Kielt and Lee Moore both pointed for the visitors with Mattie Donnelly fisting a badly needed point for Tyrone in between as Derry finished the opening period on top.

Donnelly reduced the deficit on the restart before Derry keeper Andrew Warnock made a great save to deny Tyrone midfielder McKenna.

In the 11th minute great play along the end line from McNulty saw him cut inside before squaring the ball for Donnelly to finish to the net.

Tyrone failed to build on that score however as they managed just another point after that.

Kerrigan blasted over when he could have had a goal but it was Derry who were looking the stronger side going into the final quarter.

Kerrigan put Derry in front only for Harte to level matters but with five minutes left to play Tyrone never scored again as Derry stepped on the gas.

Kielt and Moore had points before a Kerrigan goal made sure of Derry’s victory.
