Derry land hurling double

Published 21/07/2008

Derry have landed a notable hurling double within the matter of a few days.

Not only have the Oak Leaf county secured their place in the semi-final of the Christy Ring Cup but they are also through to the Ulster Under 21 final. And a substantial number of their players are involved on both fronts, none more so than Michael Kirkpatrick and Sean Leo McGoldrick who led the spectacular show of defiance which saw fancied Down defeated in the Christy Ring Cup at Newry on Saturday.

Derry were full value for their 1-20 to 0-18 win, Paddy McCluskey's early goal proving the catalyst for their stunning display highlighted by a magnificent contribution from their resolute half-back line of Brunton, Henry and Hinphey.

Carlow also made it through with a polished 1-14 to 2-4 win over Kerry having led by 0-9 to 0-3 at half-time while Mayo continued their emergence with a glorious 3-18 to 1-22 win over Wicklow in a superb contest at Aughrim where Mayo dual ace Keith Higgins shone.
