Easy for Derry

Westmeatrh 0-08 Derry 3-11: Derry had a surprisingly comfortable win over Westmeath in the second round of Division 2A of the National Hurling League in Mullingar yesterday, the Oak Leaf men emerging victorious by 12 points against the home team who had three men red-carded over the course of the game.

Patrick McCloskey got the visitors off to the best possible start when he found the net in the third minute.

The sides were level with 15 minutes elapsed (1-1 to 0-4), but Derry controlled the remainder of the first half, scoring 1-7 without reply.

The goal came in the 22nd minute from Brendan Rodgers and at the break, Derry led by 2-8 to 0-4.

The expected Westmeath comeback on the change of ends failed to materialise and Brendan Rodgers whipped in his second goal of the afternoon.

Derry scorers: O McCloskey (0-1); B Rodgers (2-2), P McCloskey (1-0), A Grant (0-6, 5f); D O'Neill (0-1). Subs: T McCloskey (0-1, f).

Westmeath scorers: N O'Brien (0-1, f), R Greville (0-1), A McGrath (0-1), N Conaty (0-3, 2f). Subs: D McNicholas (0-2, 1f).
