Ruari Convery leaves it late as Derry secure a draw
Kildare 3-17 Derry 4-14
Ruairi Convery was Derry's saviour in Newbridge as he struck 1-10, including a last-minute free, to earn his side a share of the spoils against Kildare after a thrilling clash.
The Oak Leaf talisman was deadly from placed balls all afternoon and he kept his cool in the 70th minute to land a beauty from inside his own 65-metre line.
Kildare thought they had snatched their first victory of the league when Martin Fitzgerald netted in the 67th minute but it wasn't to be for the already-relegated Lilies
Goals from Convery and Brendan Rogers gave Derry the perfect start to the game but Kildare quickly turned things around with 10 unanswered points – including five from the brilliant Gerry Keegan.
Goals from David Harney and Eanna O'Neill before half-time gave Kildare a 2-13 to 2-7 lead at the interval but a goal from Derry's Aaron Kelly after 54 minutes brought the Oak Leaf men back into contention.
Kildare's bid for victory took a major blow when Harney was shown a second yellow card in the 58th minute and they fell behind in the 66th minute when Rogers netted his second goal.
Kildare retook the lead within 60 seconds when Martin Fitzgerald found the net but their miserable league campaign ended without a win as Convery ensured that the sides finished all square.
