Devlin destroys Clonoe as Cassidy's men crash out
Ballinderry 0-14 Clonoe 0-10: Ballinderry took the first step on their long road to a second Ulster title as they overcame Tyrone champions Clonoe.
The visitors never led, paying the price for a sluggish start as the run of former Derry boss Damian Cassidy's team ended at the ground he once called home.
Ballinderry were more clinical in front of goal in the first period, with all six of their starting forwards amongst the eight different players on the scoreboard.
Man-of-the-match Aaron Devlin started it off as the Derry champions started the brighter and were 0-3 to 0-0 ahead before Clonoe knew they were in a game. The Tyrone men fought back but struggled to narrow the gap due to some wastefulness in front of goal.
The winners led by 0-8 to 0-4 at the interval, with the second quarter of the game played in a torrential downpour as the heavens opened on Derry city.
Ballinderry's defence were terrific from start to finish, with Gareth McKinless and Connor Nevin combining to keep Conor McAliskey and Daniel McNulty to a point from play between them, just seven days after they ran riot against Carrickmore.
That sluggish start was to prove costly for Damian Cassidy's team as they pressed in the second half, but were unable to close the gap to any less than two points.
They got it down to that margin at 0-11 to 0-9 with five minutes to play but it was a game that they never looked like winning without scoring a goal, and they failed to give Mickey Conlan a shot to save.
Ballinderry, aided by a couple of terrific scores from Ryan Bell, were able to hold them at arm's length and get over the line and into a quarter-final with Scotstown.
