Double joy for Tyrone as minors reach final

Tyrone 1-21 Meath 2-7

Monday, 1 September 2008

Tyrone's future stars produced an awesome performance at Croke Park yesterday as they completely blew Meath away with a superb display of attacking football to qualify for an All Ireland minor final meeting with Mayo.

Nine players featured on the scoresheet for the Red Hands with their talisman Kyle Coney landing seven second half points after failing to score in the opening period.

It was a top notch display from Raymond Munroe’s charges with Peter Harte, Niall McKenna, Ciaran Gervin, Ryan Pickering, Conor O’Neill and Finbar McQuaid others to catch the eye.

Tyrone led by five points at the break and, apart from falling behind to an early Meath effort from Paddy Gilsenan, it was a game that they always looked to be in control of.

Midfielders Niall McKenna and Martin Rodgers featured among the points as the Ulster champions led at the end of the opening quarter.

Gilsenan knocked over another couple of frees but in the 28th minute good play from Mattie Donnelly played Conor O’Neill through and he finished expertly to the net from an acute angle for a 1-7 to 0-5 interval advantage.

It took Meath 13 minutes to open their second half account via Mark Battersby but by that stage Tyrone had tagged seven points in a row with Coney hitting three of them and Diarmuid McNulty and Donnelly also on target.

Meath had missed a great chance to get back into the game in the seventh minute after Michael Newman’s penalty was saved by Tyrone keeper Tim Harney.

At the beginning of the final quarter, Meath grabbed goals from Damian Carroll and Daire Smyth in a three minute spell to reduce the deficit to five but the Leinster champions were to add just one more point in the remainder of the contest as Tyrone finished in style.

Coney landed a further four points with Conor O’Neill, Paddy McNeice and substitute Ronan McNabb also on target as the Red Hands eased over the finishing line for the county’s third All Ireland minor decider this decade.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
