Mournemen overpowered as promotion quest falters
NFL Division Two: Down 0-10 - Meath 2-11
Down's Division Two promotion hopes where dealt a big blow on Saturday night as they were comfortably beaten by Mick O'Dowd's Meath in tricky conditions at Pairc Esler.
Despite a disjointed display from Jim McCorry's home side, they looked as if they would pull back a 0-6 to 0-4 half-time deficit in the second period, only for two Meath goals to put paid to any notion of the Mournemen pulling yet another positive result out of the fire in this year's league.
It took Down until two minutes short of the interval to score their first point from play when Darragh O'Hanlon added to a pair of Paul Devlin frees before Kevin McKernan made it a two-point game heading into the second half.
They had pulled it back to the minimum by 52 minutes only for sub Bryan Menton to slot home Meath's first goal four minutes later to make it 1-8 to 0-7 for the Royals and they eventually secured an important win in their own promotion push when Padraic Harnan palmed the ball to the net two minutes from the end.
